Makoko: Where Advocacy Became Action

Makoko, one of Africa’s largest riverine informal settlements in Lagos, was our pilot for arts-based autism advocacy.

Christine painted live, and children from the community joined her, depicting their daily realities, tricycles, homes, street life, while parents watched. Simultaneously, we engaged families in conversations about autism, ability within disability, and early support.

Through this single activation, we identified eleven children living with disabilities who had never seen a doctor or accessed therapy.

Since Makoko, this initiative has expanded beyond Nigeria into Nairobi. Our vision is to take autism awareness, wellness education, and creative empowerment to underserved communities across West and East Africa.

“Art reaches where fear and ignorance cannot.”
